Exploring Energy Conversion: DIY Catapult Activity

Activity 1: Gravitational Potential Energy vs. Height (Constant Mass)

Materials Required:

  • Eva foam pieces
  • Marbles of the same mass
  • Hooks
  • Straws, Ball and cup for shooting

Procedure:
  • In this activity, participants will build a catapult using Eva foam pieces as a base and construct a frame using hooks and straws.

  • By launching marbles from different heights, students will observe how the gravitational potential energy increases with height and  converts to kinetic energy as the marbles move through the air.

Activity 2: Gravitational Potential Energy vs. Mass (Constant Height)

Materials Required:

  • Eva foam pieces
  • Marbles of different masses
  • Hooks
  • Straws, Ball and cup for shooting(same as in Experimental setup)
Procedure:
  • Participants will modify the previous catapult setup by keeping the height constant and varying the mass of the marbles.
  • By comparing the distances the marbles travel, students will discover how gravitational potential energy depends on the mass of the object and its conversion to kinetic energy.

Materials Required:

  • Eva foam pieces, Rubber bands of varying sizes and strengths, Hooks, Straws, Ball and cup for shooting(same as in Experimental setup)

  • In this activity, students will replace the weight-based mechanism with a rubber band as the source of potential energy.
  • By stretching the rubber band and releasing it, they will observe the conversion of elastic potential energy to kinetic energy as the ball is propelled forward.

  • Target objects(same as in Experimental setup)
Procedure:
