DIY Activity Ideas for Teaching Triangle Properties

Properties of triangle: Irrespective of the type of triangle, every triangle has the following properties
1. Angle sum property: The total measure of 3 angles of a triangle is 180°.
2. Side sum property: The sum of the lengths of any 2 sides of a triangle is greater than the length of the third side.
3. Exterior angle property: Exterior angle is equal to sum of internal opposite angle.
Classification of triangles – Based on angles
Acute angled triangle : All angles of the triangle are less than 90°
Obtuse angled triangle : One of the angles is more than 90° while the other two are less than 90°.
Right angled triangle : One of the angles is exactly 90°.
Activity 1: Verifying Angle Sum Property
Materials Required:
- Foam board
- Scissors
Procedure:
- Cut out triangles of different types (right, acute, and obtuse) from the foam board.
- Cut each triangle along one of its angles.
- Place the cut angles together and observe the result.
- Encourage students to compare the sum of the angles to 180 degrees for all triangles.
Activity 2: Verifying External Angle Property
Materials Required:
- Foam triangles
- Scissors
Procedure:
- Provide foam triangles of various types (right, acute, and obtuse) to each student.
- Instruct them to cut out the 2 angles of the foam triangles.
- Arrange the cut angles on a flat surface and observe the relationship between the external angles and the original triangles.
- Discuss how the external angle is related to the sum of the two remote interior angles.
Activity 3: Verifying Side Sum Property
Materials Required:
Procedure:
- Give students different triangles (right, acute, and obtuse) to work with.
- Instruct them to measure the lengths of the two shorter sides of each triangle using a transparent scale or ruler.
- Ask students to add the lengths of the two shorter sides and compare the sum with the length of the longest side.
- Discuss how the sum of the two shorter sides is always greater than the length of the longest side in all triangles.
Activity 4: Position of Altitude in Triangles
Materials Required:
- Clay
- Foam board
- Transparent scale
Procedure:
- Keep the transparent sheet scale in the vertex of angle
- Keep the clay at the end at the end of scale
- And draw the altitude of the triangle
- And observe the altitude of right angle, obtuse angle and acute angle triangles obtained on the sides or inside or outside of the triangle
Activity 5: Triangle Board
Materials Required:
- Foam board
- Pins
- Rubber bands
Procedure:
- Create a large foam board and mark different types of triangles on it.
- Attach pins at the vertices of the marked triangles.
- Use rubber bands to connect the pins and form the sides of the triangles.
- Make right angle, obtuse angle and acute angle triangles one after other and observe the angle sum property and side sum property on each triangle one after other.
- Encourage discussions about the properties of triangles based on their observations.
Activity 6: Pythagorean Property of Right Angle Triangles
Materials Required:
- Foam board
- Foam blocks (1cm^3 or any convenient size)
- Marker or pencil
Procedure:
- Start by introducing the Pythagorean theorem to the students. Explain that it is a fundamental property of right angle triangles, stating that the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
- Provide each student or group with a foam board and a set of foam blocks. The foam blocks will represent the sides of the right angle triangle.
- Instruct the students to draw a right angle triangle on the foam board using a marker or pencil. Label the sides as “a,” “b,” and “c,” with “c” being the hypotenuse.
- Ask the students to place the foam blocks on the corresponding sides of the triangle on the foam board. Each foam block represents 1 cm in length.
- Instruct the students to calculate the area of each foam block by multiplying its length, width, and height. The area of each foam block will represent the square of the corresponding side of the triangle.
- Discuss with the students how the area of the hypotenuse (side “c”) is equal to the sum of the areas of sides “a” and “b,” validating the Pythagorean theorem.
- Encourage students to experiment with different sizes of foam blocks or triangles to observe that the Pythagorean theorem holds true for all right angle triangles.
- Facilitate a discussion on real-life applications of the Pythagorean theorem, such as measuring distances, building structures, or calculating diagonals.
