Hands-On Learning: DIY Activities for Teaching Digestion and Circulation
Introduction:
For high school teachers and homeschooling parents, it is essential to engage students in hands-on activities that bring the inner workings of the human body to life. In this blog post, we present three exciting DIY activities that demonstrate the processes of digestion and circulation. These activities provide a tangible way for students to understand the roles of chewing, enzymes, bile, and the heart's one-way valves. Let's dive into these engaging experiments!
Activity 1: Investigating Digestion of Carbohydrates in the Mouth
Materials Required:
- Rice grains (unchewed food)
- Rice powder (partially chewed food)
- Starch (completely chewed food)
- Amylase (saliva substitute)
- Iodine solution (starch test)
Procedure:
- Add a small quantity of rice grains, rice powder & starch into 3 different containers.
- Label the containers: unchewed food (rice grains), partially chewed food (rice powder), completely chewed food (starch).
- Add amylase solution to the 3 containers to simulate saliva mixing with food.
- Add a few drops of iodine solution to test for the presence of starch.
- Observe the change of color in the 3 containers. Only the completely chewed food container shows a deep blue color.

Note :
Both chewing and the action of amylase are necessary to convert starch into maltose. Absence of either process hinders starch breakdown.
Digestion of fats
Activity 2: Exploring the Role of Bile in Digestion of Fats (Emulsification)
Materials:
- Water
- Oil (large fat globules)
- Soap (bile substitute)
- container
Procedure:
- Fill a container with water to represent the medium of transportation.
- Add a few drops of oil to simulate large fat globules.
- Mix in soap to represent bile juice.
- Observe the changes in the oil droplets.
- Note the key observation: Bile breaks down large fat globules into smaller ones through emulsification.

Activity 3: Creating a Miniature Two-Chamber Heart Model to Understand One-Way Valves
Materials:
- Balloons (one-way valves)
- Siphons (heart chambers)
- Pipes (blood vessels)
Procedure:
- Inflate two balloons and tie them securely to represent one-way valves.
- Arrange the balloons and connect them with pipes to create a model of the heart’s chambers and blood vessels.
- Observe the movement of air or fluid through the model.
- Note how the one-way valves allow flow in one direction only, mimicking the heart’s functioning.
