Engaging DIY Activities for Exploring Heredity and Natural Selection

Introduction:

Welcome to our super-fun DIY activity blog post, specially crafted for high school teachers and homeschooling parents! Get ready for two exciting activities that will make concepts of heredity and natural selection a blast to learn. These hands-on projects will spark curiosity, laughter, and a deep understanding of genetics and evolutionary biology.

Activity 1: Tracing the Wild Traits of a Wolf

Materials Required:

  • Tracing paper
  • Pencil
  • Wolf body outline sketch printout (downloadable on our website)

Procedure:
  • Get your creative juices flowing as we dive into the world of wolf genetics!
  • Give each student two wacky parent wolves, each with a unique trait like “fluffy ears” or “wiggly tail.”
  • It’s prediction time! Using Punnett squares, have students imagine the possible outcomes for the young wolf’s traits.
  • Equip them with tracing paper and pencils to bring their wildest imaginations to life. Let them draw the young wolf with its inherited traits on the wolf body outline sketch.
  • Encourage students to share and compare their creations, sparking giggles and awe.

Activity 2: "Survival of the Coolest" Board Game

Materials Required:

  • Exciting game board
  • Adorable pawns
  • Magic dice
  • Five funky-colored allele holders
  • 80 awesome transparent pieces (alleles

Objective of the Game:

  1. Explore how environmental changes impact the population of unique and funky-colored monsters.
  2. Dive into the wild world of dominance and see how the coolest genes prevail!

Scenario:

  1. Step into an imaginary land brimming with fabulous and quirky monsters.
  2. Unleash the power of changing environments, influencing the survival of different-colored monsters.
  3. Put on your creator hat and pair alleles to design monsters with colors that can conquer any challenge.

Winning Criteria – Survival of the Coolest:

The last player standing, with at least one amazingly cool monster, claims victory!

Representation:

  • Transparent strips represent four fabulously unique forms of a gene: Dark Green, Light Green, Brown, and Violet, each influencing the skin color of our incredible monsters.
  • Refer to the dominance table provided to determine which color reigns supreme.

How to Play:

  1. Prepare for a genetic adventure! Shuffle the alleles and distribute 20 to each player.
  2. Mix and match those alleles to create 10 utterly fantastic monsters! Use the dominance table to determine their skin colors. Stash the allele pairs in the super-cool allele holders.
  3. Place your pawns at the START position and get ready to rock this game!
  4. Roll the magic dice to make your move across the board.
  5. When you land on a block, brace yourself for the changing environment! Remove alleles from monsters affected by the challenges.
  6. The excitement continues in thrilling rounds until only one player has at least one über-cool monster left.
