Exploring Trigonometry Through Hands-On Activities for High School Students and Homeschooling Parents

Introduction:

Trigonometry can be a challenging subject to grasp, but it doesn't have to be! By engaging in these three interactive activities, high school teachers and homeschooling parents can simplify the understanding and application of trigonometric concepts.

Activity -1

Materials Required:

  • Foam board with a 1cm distance scale
  • 2 sticks to hold an adjustable protractor
  • A ruler with a 1cm distance scale
  • An adjustable protractor
Procedure:
  • Create a model with the foam board and attach the adjustable protractor.
  • Place the sticks on the foam board to hold the protractor.
  • Use the ruler to measure distances on the foam board.
  • Observe and measure the angle of elevation and depression using the protractor.

Activity 2: Finding Heights and Distances

Materials Required:

  • The model from Activity 1
Procedure:
  • Use the model created in Activity 1.
  • Apply trigonometric principles to find the height or distance of an object.
  • Use the measured angle and distances from the model to calculate the height or distance.

Activity 3: Theodolite Model

Materials Required:

  • Foam pieces
  • Mirror
  • A foam piece with 180 degrees marked on it
  • A tape measure
  • A small glass container filled with water
Procedure:
  • Assemble the foam pieces to create a theodolite-like structure.
  • Attach the mirror to one end.
  • Use the tape measure to measure the height of an object.
  • Place the glass container filled with water on the other end.
  • Ensure that the bubble in the container is centered horizontally.
  • Observe the angle indicated by the reflected image in the mirror.
