Exploring Exponents and Powers: Engaging DIY Activities for High School Teachers and Homeschooling Parents

Introduction:

In this blog post, we will present a series of hands-on activities designed to teach and demonstrate the concepts of exponents and powers. These engaging DIY activities are ideal for high school teachers and homeschooling parents seeking creative ways to make mathematics more enjoyable and accessible for their students. Let's dive in!

What is the largest number that you can think of ? Million? Billion? Trillion ? How will you represent these big numbers? It becomes difficult. Some other big numbers we come across are :
Mass of earth is 5,970,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg.
Mass of Uranus is 86,800,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 kg.
Which has greater mass, Earth or Uranus ?
As these very large numbers are difficult to read, understand and
compare, we use exponents representation to make it easy to read,
understand and compare.

Activity 1: Folding an Aluminum Paper - Exponential Growth Example

Materials Required:

  • Aluminum foil
  • and paper
Materials
Procedure:
  • Begin by giving each student a square piece of aluminum foil.
  • Instruct the students to fold the foil in half, then in half again, and continue this process for a few more folds.
  • After each fold, count the number of partitions.
  • Ask the students to record the count and observe how the partitions increase exponentially with each fold.
  • Discuss the concept of exponential growth, emphasizing how the number of partitions doubles with each fold.

What’s happening here?
As the number folds increases ,the number of partitions increase. While the number of folds increasing by 1, the number of partitions increasing exponentially, by the power of 2.

Activity 2: Real-life Applications of Positive and Negative Exponents

Materials Required:

  • Jigsaw puzzles representing the scale of the universe
  • two dice
  • pawns

Level 1: Scale of the Universe - Jigsaw Puzzle

Procedure:
  • Provide each student with a set of jigsaw puzzle pieces representing the scale of the universe, labeled with negative and positive exponents.
  • Instruct the students to arrange the jigsaw pieces in order of their exponential powers, from negative to positive (using base 10).
  • Encourage discussion and explanation of the patterns and relationships they observe.

Level 2: Scale of the Universe - Game

Procedure:

  • Build upon the previous activity by introducing a game element.
  • Each student takes turns rolling two dice: one represents the symbol (- or +), and the other represents a number from 1 to 6.
  • Based on the dice roll, the player moves to the corresponding position on the jigsaw puzzle grid, either in the negative or positive direction.
  • Continue playing until the players reach their desired positions, reinforcing the understanding of positive and negative exponents.

Level 3: Scale of the Universe - Advanced Game

  • Using the same jigsaw puzzle from Level 2, players start at a designated position.
  • Players roll the dice and multiply the shown number power with their current position, then move accordingly.
  • Observe and discuss the resulting position, emphasizing the impact of multiplying powers.
  • Encourage multiple rounds to reinforce understanding and practice.

Activity 3: Comparing Powers

Materials Required:

  • Jigsaw puzzle pieces
Puzzle pieces

Level -1 :  Comparing Powers:

  • Distribute an equal number of jigsaw puzzle pieces to two players.
  • Instruct both players to place their pieces with the blank side up.
  • Players reveal the top piece and compare the exponential powers, using base 10, written on the pieces.
  • Discuss and determine which power is greater, fostering a deeper understanding of exponents.

Level 2: Comparing Powers - Multiplication

  • Repeat the distribution of jigsaw puzzle pieces to two players.
  • Instruct both players to reveal the top two pieces and multiply the powers together, using base 10.
  • Compare the resulting products to determine which player has the greater power.
  • Discuss the concepts of multiplying powers and its impact on the comparison.

Activity 4: Pen Stand Puzzle - Law of Exponents

Materials Required:

puzzle pieces
Foam puzzle pieces with exponential formulas
Procedure:
  • Begin by gathering foam puzzle pieces with exponential formulas written on them.
  • These formulas should represent the laws of exponents (e.g., multiplication, division, powers of powers).
  • Instruct the students to arrange the foam puzzle pieces forming a decorative pattern.
  • Encourage students to pay attention to the exponent rules as they place each piece, ensuring they align correctly according to the laws of exponents.
  • As students work on their pen stands, engage them in discussions about the laws of exponents and their applications in mathematics.
  • Encourage students to explore different combinations of foam puzzle pieces, experimenting with various exponent rules and formulas to enhance their understanding.
  • Display the completed pen stands in the classroom or homeschooling area, creating a visual representation of the laws of exponents.
  • During subsequent math lessons, refer back to the pen stands to reinforce the concepts of exponents and powers.
