DIY Activity Ideas: Exploring Mensuration - Area and Perimeter
Introduction:
Distribute the Eva foam sheet with various irregular shapes to the students. Provide them with a grid sheet with units. Instruct the students to overlay the grid sheet on the irregular shape and count the filled portions within the grid squares. Encourage them to calculate the area by multiplying the number of filled grid squares by the area of one square unit.
Activity 1: Finding the Perimeter of Irregular Shapes
Materials Required:
- Eva foam sheets of different 2D shapes
- pins
- measuring tape
Procedure:
- Distribute the Eva foam sheets with various irregular shapes to the participants.
- Using the measuring tape, instruct the students to measure each side of the shape and record the measurements.
- Encourage them to calculate the sum of all the side lengths to find the perimeter of the irregular shape.
- They can secure the foam sheet in place using pins to keep it intact for further exploration.
Activity 2: Finding the Perimeter of a Circle
Materials Required:
- Eva foam sheet with a circular shape
- measuring tape
Procedure:
- Provide each participant with an Eva foam sheet in the shape of a circle.
- Instruct them to measure the circumference of the circle using the measuring tape.
- Explain that the circumference is the perimeter of a circle.
- Encourage them to calculate the perimeter of the circle using the formula P = 2πr or πd, where r is the radius and d is the diameter.
Activity 3: Finding the Area of Irregular Shapes
Materials Required:
- Eva foam sheet with printed irregular shapes
- grid sheet with units
- scissors
Procedure:
- Distribute the Eva foam sheet with various irregular shapes to the students.
- Provide them with a grid sheet with units.
- Instruct the students to overlay the grid sheet on the irregular shape and count the filled portions within the grid squares.
- Encourage them to calculate the area by multiplying the number of filled grid squares by the area of one square unit.
Activity 4: Finding Area from a Map
Materials Required:
- Map with labeled regions
- grid sheet with units
Procedure:
- Provide the participants with a map that contains labeled regions or areas.
- Give them a grid sheet with units and instruct them to overlay the grid sheet on the map.
- Ask the students to count the filled portions within the grid squares that cover the desired area.
- Guide them to calculate the area by multiplying the number of filled grid squares by the area of one square unit.
Activity 5: Making a Floor Plan
Materials Required:
- Two Eva foam sheets with printed grids
- double-sided tape
- scissors
- circular Eva foam sheet
Procedure:
- Provide each participant with two Eva foam sheets printed with grids.
- Instruct them to use the scissors to cut one of the foam sheets into their desired floor plan shape.
- Encourage them to cut a circular Eva foam sheet to represent a specific object like a table or a chair.
- Instruct them to use double-sided tape to attach the cutout shapes to the other foam sheet, creating their personalized floor plan.
